How Albert Watson made the iconic Steve Jobs photo a reality. Steve Jobs originally didn’t want the photo taken. Before the shoot, his PR person warned Albert, “I just want to let you know Steve hates photographers.” Albert wanted to make Steve comfortable. He said, “Mr. Jobs, I have some good news for you. I believe I have you for an hour.” Steve replied, “You do.” Albert said, “I think I can get this done in half an hour.” Steve’s face lit up. “Oh my gosh, that would be great. I’ve got so much to do today.” Albert then said, “I need you to imagine you’re across a table from four or five people who don’t agree with you, but you know you’re right.” Steve smiled and said, “Perfect. I do that every day.” Steve leaned forward, looked intensely, placed his thumb near his chin, and gave a subtle, confident smile. Two photos were taken. It took 20 minutes. The second photo became the iconic one. As Steve was leaving, he asked to take the Polaroid. “That’s maybe the best picture ever taken of me,” he told Albert. Albert thought he was just being polite. Years later, Apple called urgently. “We need that photo you took of Steve. Do you still have it?” Albert sent the image immediately. Not long after, he received a notification on his iPhone.
