Memphis basketball bulldozed UAB Sunday 84-72 to win the AAC tournament championship, its second in the past three years.

FORT WORTH, Texas — For the second time in as many weeks, Memphis basketball is lifting a trophy. The Tigers beat UAB 84-72 on Sunday afternoon at Dickies Arena, winning the AAC tournament title and denying the Blazers a spot in the NCAA tournament in the process.

PJ Haggerty scored 23 points, Dain Dainja had 22 points with 12 rebounds and 16th-ranked Memphis won the American Athletic Conference Tournament with an 84-72 win over UAB.

Haggerty, the AAC player of the year, put the Tigers (28-5) ahead to stay with two free throws that made it 72-71 with 40 seconds left. He finished with 18 points.

It was that kind of day for Dainja, who – like his teammate and fellow all-AAC first-teamer PJ Haggerty did the day before – carried Memphis (28-5) to a 78-77 win over Tulane (19-14) to advance to the AAC tournament championship.
