President Donald Trump unveiled a multipart proposal on Thursday aimed at lowering prescription drug prices and reducing health insurance premiums, as well as increasing pricing transparency. He also vowed to hold big insurance companies accountable.
Insurance coverage remained historically high, though it declined slightly from its peak. In 2024, 91.8% of the population was insured, down from 92.5% in 2023. Private health insurance enrollment increased from 207.0 million in 2023 to 214.3 million in 2024, driven largely by growth in Affordable Care Act Marketplace plans.
Harry Truman’s plan would have covered medical, hospital and nursing care for everyone, and created a federal health insurance agency to pay the costs of care.
