President Donald Trump on Tuesday signaled support for Russia's call for elections to be held in Ukraine, as negotiations to end the war kicked off in Saudi Arabia between Washington and the Kremlin.

Speaking on his peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump told reporters that Ukraine did not need a seat at the negotiating table because it "should've ended [the war] in three years. You should have never started it. You could have made a deal."

The United States and Russia will appoint high-level teams to negotiate the end of the war in Ukraine and are working to reestablish diplomatic channels, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at the end of key talks that excluded Kyiv.
