Long-standing societal challenges related to racism, poverty, education, housing, and underemployment are compounding the trauma, leading to chronic stress for many Gulf residents.

In this chapter, the committee attempts to provide perspective on the health of the Gulf region with the available data; historical documentation; and other sources of information, such as the committee’s public hearings and site visits. The objective is to identify and report on gaps.
