Viola Desmond (1914–1965) was a pioneering Black Canadian businesswoman and civil rights activist from Nova Scotia. She is best known for her courageous defiance of racial segregation in 1946, an act that occurred nine years before Rosa Parks’ famous protest in the United States. The 1946 Incident : On November 8, 1946, while traveling for business, Desmond’s car broke down in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. To pass the time, she went to the Roseland Theatre.
