An Traonach (Corncrake / Crex crex) The kerrx-kerrx sound of the corncrake has been compared with two cheese-graters rubbed together, producing a sound so monotonous as to qualify the bird as the world's worst singer (and hence eurovision song contest candidate!!). This lack in vocal accomplishment is more than compensated for by their dignified operatic deportment as they stand erect with head held high and beak wide open. Corncrake is a misnomer - birds rarely nest in cornfields. Favourite sit

The corncrake breeding season is in full swing. They are very secretive birds so in the wild it is difficult to spot them, but you can hear the 'crex crex' of their rasping call, which can sometimes last for hours! Find out more about the corncrake breeding programme here https://pensthorpe.com/about-us/the-conservation-trust/corncrake-2/ | Pensthorpe

Hey you…yeah you! This juvenile Corncrake just popped up to say hello 👋 For the first time ever, recorded evidence of Corncrakes successfully breeding on our Oa reserve has been captured, which is a huge win for the species and everyone involved! 👏 A big thanks to the reserve team for their conservation efforts and nature-friendly farming practices that help support the Corncrakes. And a massive shoutout to Nature North East for capturing this footage - which is no easy task as Corncrakes are

We're CREX-cited to announce that 3 calling Corncrake have returned to Church Bay on Rathlin Island for their 2023 breeding season. This is the third consecutive year they have been heard on the island. A secretive bird, you might not spot them but you might be lucky enough to hear them calling. Our team of staff and volunteers have been carrying out vital conservation work, spending the winter digging nettles to create suitable habitats for the Corncrake that returned in the spring. Thanks for

We are delighted to hear the call of the Corncrake back on Rathlin Island this season 🙌 Listen carefully when visiting the island to see if you can hear them. Corncrakes are a secretive bird, that often can’t be spotted, but their distinctive ‘crex crex’ can occasionally be heard around the island. | RSPB Northern Ireland
